Truly Madly Brutal
The architecture of the sixties and seventies often gets a bad rap—sometimes deservedly so—but many buildings from this era were born from a spirit of optimism and ambition. Manchester is home to several striking examples, and this walking tour highlights some of the best.
After World War II, the city devised the 1945 Manchester Plan—an audacious urban redevelopment scheme that, fortunately, never came to fruition. Had it gone ahead, Manchester’s wonderfully eclectic skyline would have been replaced with something far more uniform and restrained.
